# Is Erythritol a laxative?

Eating lots of sugar alcohols can lead to bloating and an upset stomach. Some sugar alcohols can cause gas and cramping or work like a laxative when they reach your colon. But erythritol is generally mostly absorbed before it gets to your colon, and is excreted unchanged in your urine. Excess gas and a laxative effect are possible, but people generally handle it better than other sugar alcohols.

The Erythritol in Lakanto is specially fermented from non-GMO corn that is safe for consumption and is also naturally low calorie because your body excretes about 90% of it before it reaches your gut - the remaining 10% turns into harmless gases and short chains fatty acids in your large intestine.

After much toxicology and clinical studies, erythritol has been found to be safe for consumption as a sugar substitute, even when consumed on a daily basis, making it a suitable sugar substitute.
