Net carbs refer to the carbohydrates in food that are digested and used by the body for energy. When counting net carbs, only starches and sugars are taken into account, as other types of carbohydrates do not provide energy or affect blood sugars. Therefore, they are not included in your daily carbohydrate limit.
To calculate net carbs, simply subtract certain components from the total carbohydrate count of a food:
1. Sugar alcohols, such as erythritol, are not digested by the body and should be subtracted.
2. Fibre, a type of carbohydrate that our bodies do not break down, passes through the digestive tract unchanged and should also be subtracted.
